Apple Inc. CEO Tim Cook announced the iPhone 7, along with the iPhone 7 Plus, in 2016 at the September launch event. As a replacement for the iPhone 6s, the iPhone 7 was controversial, as this was the first iPhone to be designed without the standard 3.5 mm jack socket. This change made it necessary to use a converter for any accessories that had previously used the old-style socket. The alternative was to buy new ones – the change affected earphones more than any other accessory. Although Apple supplied a converter with the iPhone 7, many users opted to go down the Bluetooth route, buying wireless Apple EarPods.
The iPhone 7 was also notable in that it was the most water and dust-resistant iPhone to date, in part due to the new-style Home ‘button’, which was actually a capacitive key, rather than a physical push button. Two additional colour options of jet black and matt black, plus a faster processor, superbly clear graphics, and a 12-megapixel rear camera incorporating optical image stabilisation, made the iPhone 7 a popular choice.
