Apple Watch Springing Into the Shops

The long-awaited Apple Watch (not the iWatch as many of us thought it was going to be called) is apparently to be released in spring 2015, with the rumour mill conjecturing that it will be in March. Developers have been busy since November 2014 creating apps, so there’s no reason why this wearable won’t hit the ground running so to speak (fitness-related apps are likely to be very popular).

Watch, Apple, Technology, Equipment
The price of the watch is reputed to be set at $349 US, which amounts to roughly £300, and before you buy the Apple Watch, you will need to have an iPhone 5s, an iPhone 5c or an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus to pair it with. The Apple Watch will come in 3 variants, each of which will have a whole range of finishes and strap options. The Apple Watch is the entry-level model and the stainless steel case can either be left with a plain finish or you can get it in space black. There will be an Apple Watch Sport variant with an anodised aluminium case in space grey or silver, and the high-end variant is the Apple Watch Edition with sapphire crystal display and a case of 18 carat yellow or rose goldIn fact, it looks as though anyone buying the Apple Watch will be able to customise it to some extent; for example you could choose between a 42 mm case height or go for 38mm, plus you will have the choice of finishes and a wide selection of straps in various materials (metal, leather or plastic) and colours. Apple have given a lot of thought to the aesthetics of this wearable, because it’s not just a high-tech gadget, it’s part of the wearer’s wardrobe and as such has to fit in with modern fashions as well as being functional. It is reported that Apple has been recruiting personnel from high fashion firms such as Burberry and Tag Heuer, and the Apple Watch was actually unveiled during New York Fashion Week, and it has been featured on a Vogue China cover. There is a dial on the side of the watch for navigation, and the settings and the home screen will be managed via an app on the iPhone which will display a simulation of the watch face allowing icons to be moved around and other aspects adjusted.Among the features of the Apple Watch, not surprisingly, is accurate timekeeping, and the user will be able to configure the display to suit their tastes and requirements – a world clock, times of sunrise and sunset, calendar, alarms plus a stock tracking feature – the list goes on.Another use will be as a communication tool with the capability to initiate calls and send and receive texts and emails, but without a keyboard the texts and emails will need to be created in audio and either turned into text or sent as an audio message. The user will also have access to a Handoff feature that means you can initiate a phone call or start to produce an email and then continue on the iPhone.

The health monitoring aspect of the Apple Watch is a major selling feature and it is being marketed as a health companion as well as a productivity aid.

As dates are firmed up, we will examine more of the detail of this remarkable wearable iDevice.
